SCVC Host Item Writing Workshop
November 7 & 8, 2008
Holiday Inn, San Jose
Periodically APICS performs a Cut Score Study on our certification examinations to validate the score required to pass the examinations.
The cut score process requires the assistance of volunteers who are willing to spend a day working with the APICS staff and a psychometrician from ACT, our testing vendor. Volunteers do not need to be CPIM or CFPIM certified, but they must have passed the (module) examination. The study will require a full day, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants.
Participants in a Cut Score Study will receive 20 points which can be applied toward certification maintenance and CFPIM applications.
In addition to the Item Writing session, we’re going to conduct a passing score study for one of the CPIM exams
If you would be interested in spending a day helping us sustain the excellence of the CPIM program, please send me an e-mail at sneff@apics.org. I will be happy to answer any questions you have about this project.

Item Writing Workshop Questions and Answers
The APICS certification examination items are created by certified individuals and the majority of them are created at events referred to as item writing workshops. This document describes the item writing workshop and why individuals participate in the workshops.
What is an Item Writing Workshop?
The item writing workshop is a two day event. It is typically held on a Friday and Saturday and is facilitated by one or more representatives from our test development partner ACT. ACT is one of the premier test development organizations and their representative(s) will present the ACT methodology for item writing and review. The volunteers will write and critique items. Representatives of the CPIM and CSCP certification committees will be there to help the item writing volunteers.
The first morning of the workshop is devoted to a tutorial in item writing. Volunteers will then write practice items and spend time working in groups to critique and improve on the items written by the members of the group. The remainder of the workshop is devoted to independently writing items. Volunteers may be asked to write additional items after the event to meet their commitment.
Why Participate in the Workshop?
Some of the frequently mentioned reasons for participating in the workshops are:
- You earn 20 certification maintenance points.
- You gain insights that can be used to help students prepare for the exams
- You learn to write better items for any class that you develop.
- You learn a skill to complement your teaching skills.
- You might be good at and enjoy writing items.
- You become familiar with the certification committees.
- You get the opportunity to work with one of the premier test development organizations.
- You get to network and work with other APICS volunteers to keep the exam questions current.
- It is fun.
What are the Requirements?
There are three simple requirements:
- You must have earned the CPIM, CFPIM, or CSCP designation.
- Your certification must be current.
- You must commit to participating in the entire workshop and writing a minimum number of items.
Will APICS Reimburse for my Travel Expenses?
APICS expects that most of the volunteers will commute to and from the workshop, but there are provisions to reimburse expenses for those who cannot conveniently commute. APICS will reimburse for up to $200 in transportation and lodging expenses.
How do I Volunteer?
You must send a note that includes your name, member number, and a day time telephone number to ahill@apics.org. If you will need overnight accommodations for Friday night or have any special requirements, indicate that in the note. We will send you contact information for the workshop hotel so that you can make your reservation at the guaranteed APICS rate.
What if I have Questions about the Workshop?
You can send a note with any questions to sneff@apics.org.
When is the Next Workshop?
The next workshop will be November 7-8, 2008 in San Jose, California
